Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which ages of student is this course appropriate for?

The Junior Maths Challenge is usually taken by students in school years 7 and 8 (England and Wales), S1 and S2 (Scotland) or Years 8 and 9 (Northern Ireland). These students are typically aged 11-13 and so this course is most suitable for students in this age group.

  • Could an able year 6 (or younger) student benefit from this course?

Yes, absolutely! I often do these questions to stretch able students in the 10-11 years age group. There is no minimum age limit to enter the JMC just a maximum. There is also a Primary Maths Challenge aimed at Years 5-6 and a First Maths Challenge aimed at Years 3-4, but if they find those questions too easy this could be a great choice to push them further.

  • Why is the content listed as free preview? Is it really free?

Yes, all of the content of this course is accessible through the 'free preview' section and is totally free. It has been set up in this way so that you can also 'upgrade' to make an optional £2 donation, but all the course content is free either way!

  • How long does the course take to complete?

Allow a couple of hours in total for a typical student to complete most of this free course, and another 8-10 hours for the full course, but it could take longer if students really engage with trying to solve the hardest problems themselves.
