Frequently Asked Questions - Live Classes

This page contains answers to the most common questions we receive about the group classes at Mathsaurus. If you have any further questions that are not answered here, please e-mail [email protected].

We are not usually able to offer general advice (what's the best way to prepare for GCSE?, how can I prepare students for the Olympiad? etc.) via e-mail. For these sorts of questions, please browse the relevant pages at the website or you can also attend one of our regular free webinars, where Kevin will be happy to offer advice.

If you have not already created an account, we strongly suggest you do so by visiting the page here and clicking 'Sign Up'.  If you use the same e-mail address that you booked the classes with you will then be able to log in and manage your bookings easily.

(If you have already created an account then you can visit the same page and instead click 'Log In')

Important: Live lessons are not linked to your account at courses.mathsaurus.com.  You must create a separate account at the page hereBooking lessons does not automatically create an account.

Occasionally the booking system might not recognise all of your bookings, so if you still don't see all of your classes then please e-mail [email protected] and we can make sure they are all attached to your account.

For the smoothest experience, please ensure that you are logged in before making any purchases.

Note: Even if you have not created an account, so long as you entered a valid e-mail address when booking you will receive a confirmation e-mail with links to the lessons as well as reminder e-mails with the links around 24 hours and 1 hour before each lesson.  For packages of lessons you can book in for lessons using the link in the confirmation e-mail or by entering the package code on the checkout page.

All of the webpages for the courses and classes give information about the types of student the classes are suitable for and most also have video introductions.

We understand that it can still sometimes be difficult to know where to start, and are happy to offer advice.

Please send an e-mail to [email protected], giving us details about the age of the student and their results in any recent maths challenges or exams, and we will get back to you with our suggestions.

We are not able to look at a student's work or offer a live assessment.

Thanks for booking.  For most of our classes, there is nothing in particular you need to do to prepare.

Many students attending the classes will have taken some of our self-paced online courses, including those in the All-Access Pass (ages 11-18) or the 11+ Maths Course (ages 9-11), but all the live classes also stand alone so this is not necessary to join the class.

1. Courses containing multiple lessons are not refundable. If the course is running at multiple times we may be able to transfer your booking to another time if there is space available (e-mail [email protected]), but you must transfer the whole course to another option, not individual lessons.

2. Individual Classes and packages of classes are not refundable but can be rescheduled up to 24 hours before a class starts. If your booking was part of a 5 or 10 lesson package then you can cancel the lesson and it will automatically be available to book another class. If it was purchased as an individual lesson, then you will need to cancel and then contact us at [email protected], stating which class you would like to attend instead (we aim to respond within 48 hours).

For some of our classes and courses, we offer various options to cater for students with different levels of experience.  Each individual landing page will give you more information about the types of students the lessons are aimed at.

For the most part, there is a lot of overlap between the levels, so for example the second half of a 'regular' class is likely to be at a similar level to the first half of an 'advanced' class, and many students will choose to attend classes at more than one level.

It is quite common, for example, for students to take both the regular and advanced track of a course in the run up to a maths challenge or to attend a mix of classes.  For example, an 'Advanced' or 'Olympiad' Junior (age 11-13) student may also decide to attend a 'Regular' Intermediate session aimed at ages 13-16.

If you decide to purchase a pack of 5 or 10 classes, you don't need to sign up to all classes immediately, so if you want to you can try one or two out before deciding which classes to use the other tickets for.

We aim to send out copies of any questions and notes that were on screen during the class within 24 hours after each lesson.  Lessons are not recorded so there is no video recording available.

We do not set homework after the classes, though for courses with multiple lessons we may occasionally leave some open questions between lessons.

Students who wish to do more work in between lessons are encouraged to work through content from the All-Access Pass (ages 11-18) or the 11+ Maths Course (ages 9-11).

Lessons are not recorded and permission to make recordings is not given.

For courses involving multiple lessons, for example those we run in the run up to maths challenges, we often offer the same course with the same content at different times in the week.  In this case the individual course page will also state that you should only sign up for one time offered.

For our drop-in classes, such as the challenge and enrichment classes, each class will cover a different set of problems without repeating, so you can feel free to attend multiple classes in a week if you would like to.

Yes, if you have more than one child attending the classes, you can use some of your tickets for one child and some for another child, without any additional admin.  When you book individual lessons, there is also an option to amend the name of the student attending to let us know which student will be there.

The packages of 5 or 10 lessons can be used for different levels (Primary, Junior, Intermediate) and so this option is also suitable for children of different ages.

No, we cannot give refunds in this scenario.  Lessons can rescheduled up to 24 hours in advance of the lesson.  After that time all bookings are final.

You will still receive an e-mail after the class with the questions and working written on the on-screen whiteboard, so you will be able to try the problems in your own time later.

If a class or course is advertised as for a certain age group, then enthusiastic younger students are always welcome to attend.

Whilst the majority of students will be in the age range stated we often have students in our lessons who are very advanced for their age.

We do not allow students older than the age range stated to attend.

Mathsaurus is based in the UK, and lesson times written on the website will always be in the current UK time zone (GMT in winter, and BST = GMT + 1 in the summer).

If you are based in a different time zone, then on any class booking page you can choose your time zone and it will convert all times to your local time.

There are no free trials for live classes.

Mathsaurus offers a wide range of free self-paced courses, and a free trial of the All-Access Pass, where you can get a sense of the style of our teaching before attending a live class.

We do not currently offer any options for 1-1 tuition.

Whilst the 5 and 10 class passes are the best value way to book our regular lessons, you can also book most of our classes one at a time.  So you can feel free to try out a class before purchasing a pass.

Where courses with multiple lessons are offered, you must sign up for the whole course and these are also separate from any lessons booked using passes.

The 5 and 10-class passes can be used to book for most of our 'Challenge and Enrichment' lessons.

Courses with multiple lessons are not included and must be booked separately, and occasionally we may offer additional longer lessons that are not included in the pass.

Most of our weekly Primary, Junior and Intermediate challenge lessons are included in the pass though, are you are always welcome to use your pass for any combination of these lessons.

Mathsaurus offers group classes for a range of ages throughout the year.  At some times of year, for example in the run up to major exams and maths challenges, we may adjust the schedule to have more of a certain type of lessons.

We also usually have a week or two without lessons at the end of each half-term.

We have been gradually increasing the number of lessons available and the variety of times on offer and hope that we will be able to continue to do so in the future.

Whilst we may not always be able to add lessons in at the best time for all students, we always welcome feedback and suggestions about the schedule at [email protected].
